AMHERST, Massachusetts - In its 2017 non-conference finale the Marist women's lacrosse team lost to UMass, 10-7, on March 25. The Red Foxes now stand at 4-5 while the Minutewomen are 5-3.

Junior Morgan Jaycox and sophomore Hailey Wagner each scored two goals and senior Natalie Bonaroti posted team highs of three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the red and white.

Marist climbed out of a 4-0 hole in the first half, hitting the back of the net four times in fewer than four minutes with the help of Wagner. Junior Lauren Mazza also scored the first of three Marist free positon goals on the run and the score was tied 4-4 by the halftime break.

The Minutewomen found the back of the net 1:06 in to the second half, but Witczak made a pair of her career-high 18 saves on the day before senior Olivia Pitonzo answered with a free position score on the next Red Foxes' possession. Two more Marist goals gave the Red Foxes a 7-5 lead and forced a UMass timeout with 19:32 to go. UMass snatched back momentum by causing turnovers and capitalizing on scoring opportunities, closing out the game with a 5-0 run that began with a pair of goals from junior Abby Walker.

Senior Sarah Crowley led the UMass defense with six ground balls and six caused turnovers. Walker ended up with a hat trick. The Minutewomen outshot the Red Foxes 35-18 and collected 26 ground balls to Marist's nine.

Marist will begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at 1 p.m. April 1 when it plays at Monmouth. The contest will be a rematch of last year's MAAC Championship semifinal.
