Water Polo Sweeps Senior Day Twinbill

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist water polo team swept its Senior Day and annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home play day with victories over the Virginia Military Institute Keydets 15-8 and the La Salle Explorers 26-1. The 26 goals against the Explorers was the most scored by the team in one game this season.

With the wins, the Red Foxes improve to 11-11 (3-1 MAAC) on the season.

Against the Keydets, freshman Justine Castro and sophomore Grace Doerfler led Marist offensively scoring three goals and recording one assist each. Senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa chipped in two goals, six assists and four steals and moved into second place all-time in program history with 151 career assists, passing Angie Rampton (07-10) who had 146. Senior Nastassia McGlothlin finished with two goals, junior co-captain Diana Carballo chipped in one goal, one assist and three steals, senior co-captain Jocelyn McQuade and sophomore Susan Cantoni finished with one goal, one assist and one steal each, and freshman Anais Mathes and sophomore Ariana Singer finished with one goal and one assist each.

Versus the Explorers, four players scored hat tricks and 12 players scored goals, the most in one game for the Red Foxes this season. Castro finished with three goals, one assist and one steal for her second consecutive hat trick. Singer chipped in three goals and two steals, Doerfler finished with three goals and one steal for her second consecutive hat trick and freshman Carolyn Gauvin finished with three goals, the most she has scored in one game in her career. Amorosa chipped in two goals and four assists, freshman Bree Marmion finished with two goals and two assists, sophomore Caoimhe Whitebloom had two goals, two assists and one steal, McGlothlin finished with two goals, one assist and two steals and freshman Lily Aguirre-Murray chipped in the first two goals of her career and Mathes finished with two goals as well. Carballo chipped in one goal, four assists and one steal and freshman Lexi Puhl finished with one goal and four steals.

VS. VMI:

Shelby Barkley got VMI on the board first with a goal at the 2:07 mark of the first quarter. Marist then scored eight unanswered to take an 8-1 with 2:36 in the second quarter. Sophia DelBondio scored with 2:16 left in the second to make the halftime score 8-2.

Back-to-back goals by Baily Huddleston and Cecilya Lundy trimmed the deficit to 8-4 with 6:31 in the third quarter before McGlothin scored, followed by Huddleston and Lundy again to make it 9-6 with 4:04 left in the third. The Red Foxes rolled off four straight goals by Doerfler (2), Amorosa and Mathes to take 13-6 lead with 0:08 left in the third quarter.

Back-to-back goals by Sarah Dolitsky and Huddleston made it 13-8 Marist before Castro and McGlothlin scored to finish out the scoring and give the Red Foxes the 15-8 win.

VS. La Salle

Following a Senior Day ceremony celebrating the careers of Amorosa, McQuade and McGlothlin. Marist scored seven goals in the first quarter by Amorosa (2), Gauvin (2), Singer, McGlothlin and Carballo to take the early 7-0 lead.

Seven more goals in the second quarter by Doerfler (2), Singer, Mathes, Aguirre-Murray, Castro, Puhl and the score at the half was 14-0 Red Foxes.

Marist scored five more times in the third quarter to take a 19-0 lead with eight minutes left to play.

Paige Neary scored the Explorers lone goal on the day on a five meter shot with 7:18 left and the Red Foxes scored seven more times with Castro (2), Marmion, Singer, Doerfler, Gauvin and Mathes finding the back of the net to give Marist the 26-1 victory.

The Red Foxes return to action tomorrow as they take on the Iona Gaels 2:30 PM at Siena College.
