NEW ROCHELLE, New York -Sophomore Hailey Wagner broke the single-season draw controls record by winning nine, as the Marist women's lacrosse team topped Iona, 13-9, on April 22 to clinch a berth in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.
The championship game times are to be determined, but the first round will take place April 29 at sites to be determined while the semifinals and finals will be held May 5 and 7, respectively, on the Canisius College campus in Buffalo, New York. The Golden Griffins clinched the regular season championship and no. 1 seed with their victory over Fairfield earlier today.
Wagner reached 95 draw controls for 2017, shattering the old mark of 88 set by Jamie Romano in 2014. She has 157 draw controls in just short of two seasons as a Red Fox. In today's game of runs, she had three assists and four goals to go along with her latest milestone.
Senior Natalie Bonaroti tied her career high with four goals and scooped up two ground balls and senior Abigail Witczak made 14 saves in the cage.
Wagner had a hand in all three Marist goals in a low scoring first half. Neither side hit the back of the net for more than 14 minutes in the opening stanza and there was a stretch that featured three blocked shots. Iona junior Pamela Giordano cut the Red Foxes' advantage to 3-2 with 53 seconds to go in the half with one of her four goals on the afternoon.
There were a combined 17 goals in the second half, as the Red Foxes' offense broke out on a 9-2 run that featured three straight scores from Bonaroti, including one with a woman up. Marist erupted to reach an eight-point lead twice before Iona got on the board with four consecutive goals. Marist freshman Samantha Mehalick added two scores on the day to bring her team leading total to 33.
Iona senior Erin Pugh led the Gaels with three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Marist dominated in draws, 15-9, but Iona had 14 caused turnovers to the Red Foxes' four.
In their 2017 regular season finale, the Red Foxes will battle Siena at 4 p.m. April 26 in Tenney Stadium. If the Red Foxes finish anywhere between the 3-6 seed they will play in a MAAC First Round contest April 29. The no. 3 squad will host the no. 6 team and the four seed will host the no. 5 team.
