POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Sophomore Hailey Wagner broke her own Marist single-game record for draw controls, winning 21 in the women's lacrosse team's 17-10 win over Quinnipiac to begin postseason play April 29.

With the victory in the first round of the MAAC Championships in Tenney Stadium, no. 3 Marist will move on to the semifinal round to face no. 2 Fairfield at 4 p.m. May 5 in Buffalo, New York.

The Red Foxes (10-8, 5-3 MAAC) also tied their record for draw controls in a single-game, winning 25 to the Bobcats' four. Marist outshot Quinnipiac 35-22.

Wagner's 21 draw controls tied for the second most ever in an NCAA game and were three short of the all-time record of 24. The 21 draw controls were also tied for most in an NCAA game this year.  

Wagner added four assists while senior Olivia Pitonzo had team highs with five assists and a pair of caused turnovers. Four different Red Foxes had hat tricks.

The game's pace quickend as the opening stanza went on and the teams traded runs. Marist ripped off four straight goals, two of which were assisted by Pitonzo to pull in front 5-2 by the 8:38 mark. The Bobcats kept their deficit to three with a trio of free position goals and the Red Foxes led 8-5 at halftime.

Momentum shifted to Quinnipiac in the second half, as it opened with three goals in just under a 9-minute span to knot the score at 8 with 19:39 left to play. Marist got back ahead with the help of two assists from Wagner and scores by senior Natalie Bonaroti and sophomore Audrey Cerrone.

After Quinnipiac freshman Brianna Fitzgerald converted on a free position shot for her third and final goal of the day, the Bobcats were down by three once again. The Red Foxes erupted with four more goals and shut down the Bobcats' attack to survive and advance to the next round of the postseason. 

The Bobcats went 6-for-7 from the 8-meter arc and owned a 23-17 edge in ground balls. Senior Alex Hlesciak had a hat trick and picked up three ground balls while sophomore Julia Corrice scooped up a game-high five ground balls. 

Quinnipiac ended the season 4-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play after appearing in its first postseason contest since joining the conference in 2014.
