BUFFALO, New York – The Marist women's lacrosse team fell to the no. 2 seed Fairfield University Stags in the semifinal round of the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on May 5.
A strong defensive start for both teams kept the game locked at zero for the first 12 minutes of action. The game's opening goal came off the stick of Fairfield at the 18:28 mark. The Stags then added another just under a minute later to take a 2-0 lead.
The Red Foxes would get on the board at the 16 minute mark after Lauren Mazza scored her first of three in the half. Fairfield would tack on two more before Mazza would strike again to make it 4-2.
At halftime, the Stags would hold a 9-5 lead over the Red Foxes. Along with Mazza's hat trick freshman Samantha Mehalick and senior Natalie Bonaroti also added goals. The Fairfield Stags saw hat tricks from both senior Riley Hellstein and senior Alex Fehmel.
Fairfield came out in the second half on fire, opening up an 11-5 lead with 18:44 left in the game. The Stags never looked back from there as Fairfield outshot Marist 33-16 and had a total of 20 shots on goal.
Mazza led Marist with five points (four goals, one assist). Mehalick added two goals and All-MAAC Second Team representative Hailey Wagner tallied a game-high nine draw controls and two assists.
The Red Foxes finished their 2017 season 10-9 overall after competing in the MAAC Championship semifinals for the sixth straight year.
