POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Former Marist baseball player
Scott Boches has been assigned to the Class R Arizona League Mariners to begin his professional baseball career.
Boches was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 30
th Round (Pick 903) of the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Wednesday, June 14
th, becoming the 19
th player to be drafted in program history and eighth under current head coach
Chris Tracz.
In 16 appearances/13 starts in 2017, Boches went 6-5 with a team leading 2.72 ERA. In 86 innings pitched, he gave up 31 runs (26 earned) on 82 hits with 28 walks and 85 strikeouts for a 3.05 K/BB ratio and had a .245 batting average against. Boches was named a Gregg Olson Award Semi-Finalist, an award given to college baseball's top breakout player each season.
The Red Foxes currently have three other players playing professional baseball for the 2017 season.
Kevin McCarthy (2011-13) currently plays for the Kansas City Royals and was drafted by the team in the 16
th round in 2013. McCarthy became the first former Marist player to have his contract purchased by an MLB team on Sept. 6
th 2016 and became the first former Red Fox to appear in a MLB game when he made his Royals debut on Sept 9
th 2016 at the Chicago White Sox. He was called up to Kansas City for the second time from May 29th-June 7th and then again on June 19th in 2017.
Zach Shank (2010-13) currently plays for the Tacoma Rainiers, the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and was drafted by the team in the 28
th round in 2013. Shank played in 22 games for the Mariners during spring training in 2017 and hit .368 (7-for-19) with one double, six RBI, a .421 slugging percentage and a .538 on base percentage.
Steve Laurino (2013-15) currently plays for the Frederick Keys, the A advanced affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and was drafted by the team in 25
th round in 2015.
Ricky Pacione (2008-11) is currently in his fourth season as the bullpen catcher for the Cleveland Indians and became the first former player in program history to be associated with an MLB team that appeared in the World Series when the Indians played the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
