John Hurley became the first Marist swimmers to qualify for and participate in the U.S. Open Swimming Championships this summer.
Madeira was a member of two relay teams and Hurley raced in the 400-meter individual medley at the most competitive USA Swimming meet of the year, which was held from Aug. 2-6 at Eisenhower Pool in Hempstead, New York. The two Red Foxes represented their club programs, Metro Aquatic Club and Long Island Express respectively.
Swimming the first leg of the 400-meter freestyle relay, Madeira clocked in at 53.22 seconds to lead his squad to 13th place (3:29.46) on Aug. 3. The following day Madeira was the second sprinter for the ninth place 200-meter freestyle relay team. His split of 1:55.97 propelled the foursome to a final time of 7:46.63.
In earlier events Aug. 4, Hurley swam to a time of 4:34.80 in the preliminaries of the 400-meter individual medley. He qualified for the U.S. Open after winning the same event at the Senior Metropolitan Long Course Championships, making the cut with a finish of 4:29.39. Hurley placed in the top 15 in four other events at the Long Course meet and registered top 10 times in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke.
Marist swimming and diving will hold its first official practice and begin its 2017-18 preseason Sept. 1 in McCann Natatorium.
