POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's soccer team fell to Siena 2-0 in the MAAC semifinals on Wednesday evening. The Red Foxes concluded an impressive season at 9-8-2 overall and 7-3-1 in MAAC play. With Coach Leigh Howard earning Coach of the Year in her first season and strong performances brought by many of the underclassmen, the team will have a lot to of opportunities to build on their success next year.
- Siena scored the first goal of the game at 23:19. Ashleigh Sarafin put a ball in front of an open Darby D'Angelo, who chipped it into the net.
- The Saints would strike again at 62:16. Meghan Riccardi took advantage of a wide-open goal after Marist goalie Abby Renaud came out in an attempt to bat away the ball.Â
- Marist would have scoring opportunities in the box throughout the second half, but none were able to be converted to goals.
- Siena led in shots 21-11 and shots on goal 8-4.
- Marist goalkeeper Abby Renaud had six saves.
- Jillian Colucci led the Red Foxes with three shots, one of which was on goal.
- Siena's Taylor Dorado made four saves to secure the shutout.
"I think coming out of that game we have to give all the credit to Siena for the way they fought and turned around the result from a couple weeks ago. There were some moments where if we were able to capitalize it would have been a different game" remarked Coach
Leigh Howard. "They did a fantastic job winning 50-50 battles and putting the ball in the back of the net when it counted. In terms of the season, I really can't speak highly enough about the way the team persevered through a lot of adversity, especially in the second half. There were injuries and tight results, but it shows the leadership of our senior class; to get results, and to do so in a way that was reflective of what the coaching staff wanted and preached. To be able to do that with a new staff, and to go through some of the turnover they've seen in four years speaks volumes about them as people."
With the end of the season comes the end of college careers for the Marist seniors.
