POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – On Wednesday, November 28, ESPN on-air personality and writer Kate Fagan will visit Marist College to talk about athletics, social media and the impact they have on the student experience. She will discuss the story of Maddy Holleran, as well as the appearances people display online and the affect they play on mental health. Fagan's presentation will be open to the public at 5:30 p.m. in Fusco Recital Hall.
"We are so excited to give our student-athletes and campus community the opportunity to hear Kate Fagan. As we continue to bring more awareness to mental health issues, it will be timely to have Kate on campus to lead these discussions" stated Director of Student Athlete Enhancement
Alyssa Gates. "We are also looking forward to partnering with Marist Counseling Services in an effort to provide continued support for our students, as well as find ways to keep the conversation going and to break the stigma surrounding mental health."
Aside from her consistent appearances on ESPN's "Around the Horn", Fagan is also known as the writer of
What Made Maddy Run. The novel started as the profile of a successful young athlete who took her own life, but became much larger when Fagan began to hear about other college athletes and their struggles with mental illness. Maddy Holleran's story reveals the mounting pressure that young people and college athletes face to be perfect in an age of maintained appearances and social media.
Fagan played basketball at University of Colorado Boulder where she set a Big 12 Conference record for free throws and was a perennial Academic First-Team Big 12 performer. She played two seasons with the Colorado Chill of the National Women's Basketball League before moving to a career as a professional sports writer. She was on the staff of the Philadelphia Inquirer from 2008-2011 as the Philadelphia 76ers beat writer before joining ESPN in 2012.
Fagan will host a talk for the Marist student athletes the same day at 11:00 a.m. in McCann Arena.
