Baseball Beats Siena 8-5 in Series Finale

TROY, New York – The Marist baseball team picked up its third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season on Monday with an 8-5 victory vs the Siena Saints at Robison Field on the campus of Rensselear Polytechnic Institute.

The Red Foxes totaled 11 hits on the day, including multiple hits by four different players and scored two or more runs in three of their nine innings at the play.

SUMMARY:

Siena took the game's first lead in the bottom of the first inning with a one out solo homerun to right field.

Marist answered one inning later when redshirt junior Jordan Roper walked and senior Matt Iantosca singled to set up men on first and second. Two batters later, junior Anthony Lazar knocked and RBI single through the left side, scoring Roper and advancing Iantosca to third. During the next at bat, Iantosca scored on a wild pitch and the Red Foxes held a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the third, redshirt senior Greg Kocinski reached first on a strike three wild pitch and two batters later, Gregoire singled to right to put runners on first and third. After junior Randy Taveras walked to load the bases, Roper laced an RBI single to right that scored Kocinski, before Gregoire scored on an error by the right fielder to give Marist a 4-1 advantage.

The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single, followed by a walk. An error by the catcher moved the runner from second to third, which was followed by an RBI single to shortstop. After back-to-back fielder's choices, an error by the shortstop allowed the batter to reach and a runner to score from third and after three the score was 4-3 in favor of the Red Foxes.

After a scoreless fourth, a leadoff single by Tyler Kapuscinski got Marist started in the fifth and two batters later, an RBI double by Roper to left center brought the Red Fox lead back to two runs at 5-3.

One inning later, freshman Nick Cantone and Lazar walked to open the frame. Two batters later, Kocinski ripped an RBI single down the right field line and Kapuscinski followed with a two RBI triple to center to bring the score to 8-3.

Siena made it 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth with a one out double and an RBI single. Down by four heading into their last at bat in the ninth, the Saints trimmed the deficit to three with a leadoff double, followed by a single and an RBI ground out. However, senior Mike Coss retired the next two batters on ground outs to secure the 8-5 win.

  • With his RBI single in the 6th, Kocinski extended his hitting streak to five games
  • Lazar picked up two hits on the day, his eighth multi-hit game of the season in 13 games played and second in the past four
  • Kapuscinski's two hits gives him hits in 7 of his 8 games this season since returning from injury
  • Roper tied a career high with 3 hits and two RBI
UP NEXT:

The Red Foxes were scheduled to return to action at McCann Field with a non-conference game vs the University at Albany Great Danes on Tuesday (3 p.m.) however, due to impending weather the game was postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. Marist will then return to play this weekend when they travel to Richmond, VA for a three game non-conference series at the Richmond Spiders on Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (noon).
