BUFFALO, New York – The Marist baseball team lost a one run lead in the final inning to fall to the Canisius Golden Griffins 4-3 in the 2018 regular season finale.
GAME SUMMARY:
The Golden Griffins opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a leadoff single. The next batter reached on a fielding error by the first baseman which was then followed by a sacrifice bunt that set up men on second and third with one out. The following laced an RBI single to left field that scored a run and during the next at bat, the runners stole third and home to give Canisius a 2-0 lead.
The Red Foxes answered in the top of the sixth inning when freshman
Reece Armitage led off with a single to second base and sophomore
Matt Rubayo followed with a hit by pitch. Two batters later, senior
Andrew Rouse was hit by a pitch to load the bases and redshirt senior
Greg Kocinski laced an RBI single through the right side that scored Armitage. Redshirt sophomore
Tyler Kapuscinski then reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that allowed Rubayo to score and after a strike out swinging, a wild pitch allowed Rouse to score to give Marist a 3-2 lead.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the ninth inning when the Golden Griffins came to bat for the final time in the game. After a ground out by the leadoff batter, a walk was then followed by a hit by pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. The next batter struck out swinging, before the runners stole second and third during the next at bat which was then followed with a walk off two RBI single through the right side that gave Canisius their second straight walk off win and the three game series sweep.
