POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist Athletics Department will conduct voting for the 2017-18 season's games of the year via Twitter,
@MaristAthletics.
Voting will take place on Wednesdays beginning on July 11. Quarterfinal voting will take place over the ensuing four weeks, with semifinal voting occurring on Aug. 8 and Aug. 15. The two semifinal winners will face off on Aug. 22 for the Game of the Year final.
Here are this year's nominees, presented in chronological order:
Men's Soccer – Aug. 25
The Red Foxes scored three goals in the final 25 minutes to erase a two-goal deficit and record a 3-2 victory over Albany in their season opener. Albany had entered the season ranked 19
th in the College Soccer News Preseason Poll, and was the defending America East champion.
Women's Soccer – Oct. 11
Jillian Colucci's goal in the 88
th minute propelled the Red Foxes to a 2-1 triumph at Monmouth. The win snapped several streaks for the Hawks, who lost their first MAAC home contest in their five years in the league, suffered their first home loss in over a calendar year, and had the nation's longest active home streak snapped (13 matches).
Football – Nov. 11
The Red Foxes trailed by 11 early but two fourth-quarter touchdowns propelled Marist to a 38-31 victory over Morehead State on Senior Day. Willie Barrett recovered two fumbles in the fourth quarter, one which helped set up the game-winning score, and one which helped seal the victory.
Volleyball – Nov. 17
After dropping the first two sets to Rider in the MAAC Championship opening round, the Red Foxes roared back to capture the final three sets and earn a semifinal berth. The final set had four lead changes, but the Red Foxes prevailed 15-13 to win the match. Nikki DeSerpa paced Marist with a career-high 24 kills.
Women's Basketball – Jan. 21
The Red Foxes trailed by four with 20 seconds remaining, but five straight points to close the game lifted Marist to a 68-67 home victory over Rider. Grace Vander Weide's two free throws gave Marist the lead with seven seconds left, and Alana Gilmer preserved the win with two blocked shots on Rider's final possession.
Men's Basketball – Jan. 30
Ryan Funk's three-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining lifted the Red Foxes to a 62-59 victory at Manhattan. Marist trailed by as much as nine in the game, and the Red Foxes were down five with 1:33 left.
Men's Swimming & Diving – Feb. 14-17
At the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship, the Red Foxes broke seven school records – Danny Knoll (50 & 100 free), John Hurley (400 IM), Evan Nilsson (1650 free), Murray Coueslant (200 fly), 200 medley relay, and 800 free relay.
Men's Lacrosse – Feb. 25
The Red Foxes earned an 8-7 home victory against Binghamton. The Red Foxes took the lead for midway through the third quarter as they held the Bearcats scoreless for nearly 18 minutes, and withstood a late Binghamton rally. Brian Corrigan had 10 saves, and Joe Tierney contributed four points.
Water Polo – March 4
The Red Foxes earned a come-from-behind 15-14 victory against Hartwick, which was ranked 13
th in the country. Marist trailed 12-9 entering the fourth quarter, but scored six goals to earn the victory. Grace Doerfler and Susan Cantoni each scored two goals in the final quarter.
Softball – March 23
Buoyed by 11 strikeouts from Kallen Leeseberg, the Red Foxes earned a 2-1 victory at North Carolina State of the ACC. Marist took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Caroline Baratta's RBI single, with Baratta scoring the second run on an error, and made the advantage hold up.
Baseball – April 14
Trailing 7-3 to Niagara, the Red Foxes tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, and won it on Chris Tracz's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to complete a series sweep. All of Marist's wins in the series came in the team's final at-bat.
Women's Lacrosse – April 25
With the MAAC regular-season championship and #1 seed at stake, Marist came through with a 19-7 victory at Siena. On a day filled with records and milestones, Samantha Mehalick set the program's season record for goals, tied the single-game record, and scored her 100
th career goal. Hailey Wagner broke her own single-season draw control record, and Morgan Jaycox scored her 100
th career point.
Men's Tennis – April 28
The Red Foxes earned a 5-1 victory over Quinnipiac to advance to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship final. After securing the doubles point, Marist prevailed in four singles matches thanks to triumphs from Javier Restrepo, Rudolf Kurz, Gianlucca Massa, and Christopher Gladden.
Women's Tennis – April 28
A 5-0 shutout of Siena propelled Marist into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship final. The Red Foxes won the doubles point, and then earned straight-set victories from Julia Gabay, Claire Schmitz, Sam Galu, and Amy Galloway.
Women's Track & Field – May 6
Deborah Boerke won the 400-meter hurdles at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It was the first MAAC championship for Boerke, who won in a school-record time of 1:01.25.
Men's Rowing – June 1-3
For the first time since 2007, the men's rowing Varsity 8 competed at the IRA Championships. For the first time, the boat was selected to compete at IRAs as an at-large selection. The Varsity 4 also competed at the championships.
