Baseball Finishes Season at MAAC Championships

Red Foxes Fall to Monmouth in Ten Hard-Fought Innings

STATEN ISLAND, New York - Marist baseball was defeated by Monmouth in an intense ten-inning battle by a final score of 13-11. Each time one team pulled ahead, the other would retaliate and the Red Foxes continued to find answers for the Hawks' surges until the very end. Many players had huge games with clutch hits to cap off one of the highest scoring games in MAAC Championship history.

SUMMARY
  • Monmouth scored an unearned run in the first for an early lead.
  • Tyler Kapuscinski grounded out in the bottom of the inning but brought home Anthony Lazar to tie the game.
  • In the second, Brian Hart singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. Then, Patrick Lightner had a big hit to right field and Hart rounded third and dodged a tag at the plate to put Marist in the lead.
  • Anthony Lazar came up next, and smashed a two-run homer to right field to give the Red Foxes a 4-1 lead. Lightner was driven home.
  • The Hawks tallied four runs on five hits and a Marist error in the top of the third, and took a 5-4 lead.
  • Robbie Armitage was walked with loaded bases in the bottom of the fourth to tie up the game once again.
  • Monmouth scored another run in the sixth to take back a 6-5 lead.
  • The Hawks intentionally walked Kapuscinski to load the bases, and then Robbie Armitage hit an RBI-single to right field to tie the game and send home Lazar.
  • Monmouth scored three runs in the seventh on three hits and an error to gain a three run advantage.
  • Marist loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, and Kapuscinski was hit by a pitch cut the Hawks' lead to 9-7.
  • Robbie Armitage came up big with a single to left field, driving in Lazar and Taveras to tie the game at 9-9.
  • In the eighth, Patrick Lightner reached on a throwing error and Gene Napolitano scored to take back the lead for the Red Foxes.
  • Frankie Gregoire grounded out but drove home Matt Rubayo to build the deficit to 11-9.
  • In the ninth, Monmouth hit a two-run homer to tie the game once again and force extra innings.
  • The Hawks went on to score two runs in the tenth and take home the victory by a score of 13-11.
KEY STATS
  • Anthony Lazar was superb, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs, two doubles, two walks and five runs scored.
  • Tyler Kapuscinski went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, three walks and a hit-by-pitch.
  • Robbie Armitage had four RBIs in two hits with a walk.
  • Frankie Gregoire and Patrick Lightner added an RBI each.
  • Though he earned the loss, Skyler Pichardo had as strong of a day as any Marist pitcher with five strikeouts and no walks over 3.2 innings. He gave up three earned runs.
  • Nick Cantone put in a solid showing as well, striking out three in 3.1 innings while allowing two earned runs.
NOTES
  • This was the highest scoring MAAC Championship game since Canisius defeated Rider by a score of 18-7 in the 2013 MAAC tournament.
  • With the end of their season comes the end of collegiate careers for the graduating seniors. Frankie Gregoire, Anthony Lazar, Alex Marinelli, Tony Romanelli and Randy Taveras helped the Red Foxes win the 2017 MAAC championship, and were instrumental in the program's success. They compiled 109 career wins and qualified for the MAAC Championship all four seasons. They retire as one of the most decorated classes in Marist history, and they left a mark on the culture of the team and in the record books.
