POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - On Wednesday, March 4, the MArist Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is organizing a halftime Teddy Bear Toss to promote mental health awareness in the local community.
Fans who bring new teddy bears and stuffed animals to throw onto the court during halftime will receive free bench seats for the game. Fans must show their teddy bear at the box office the night of the game to receive this offer. Proceeds will primarily benefit Mental Health America (MHA) of Dutchess County, as well as the Anderson Home for Autism.
By donating a stuffed animal, SAAC aims to promote mental awareness in the community as well as the nation. MHA of Dutchess County aids those in need of mental health, drug addiction, homeless and more.
"Being able to make a difference in the community is fulfilling on any level, whether it be donating money, giving a free meal or just helping someone in need," remarked SAACÂ President Ryan Sinnott. "For us to be able to utilize our stature as student-athletes to do something good for the community is a fulfilling feeling."
The stuffed animals symbolize the feeling of comfort, so those in need will not feel alone. They send the message that people can speak to someone in their family, at MHA or in the community.
The SAAC is made up of representatives from all 23 varsity programs. The organization works to advance leadership skills in student-athletes and promote community engagement as one cohesive group.
