POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's lacrosse team defeated the UMass Lowell River Hawks 15-10 on Tuesday evening. The Red Fox offense came alive in the second half, outscoring the River Hawks 9-5 in the period. The attack was led by
Samantha Mehalick, who had a game-high six goals, scoring her 200th career goal in the process.
With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 2-4 on the year, and 2-1 at Tenney Stadium. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell falls to 2-5 so far in 2020.
- The River Hawks got off to a quick start, scoring the first two goals of the game. They held that lead for nearly the first 10 minutes, but Alexandra Di Chiara gave the offense a jolt with the goal at the 20:08 mark of the half. She then connected with Kelly George two minutes later with a beautiful pass to even the game at two.
- Marist and UMass Lowell each traded a goal, and then Mehalick put the Red Foxes in front with just under five minutes to go in the half with her first goal of the game.
- The River Hawks evened up the game with a minute remaining, but Mehalick found the back of the net again to give the Red Foxes a 6-5 lead at halftime.
- Mehalick scored two more goals to begin the second half, but UMass Lowell was able to respond and cut the lead to 8-7.
- George scored her sixth goal of the season with 23:50 left to go in the game, and sparked a mini 3-0 Marist run to put Marist in front 11-7.
- The River Hawks would not go away, as they rallied yet again with back-to-back goals from Samantha Blair and Hannah Rose.
- This time the Red Foxes made sure to leave no doubt, as they scored the scored the next four goals which were highlighted by a no-look behind-the-back dagger from Mehalick.
- Marist went on to win 15-10.
- Mehalick led the Red Fox attack with a game-high six goals. She also added two ground balls, one caused turnover, and one draw control.
- Kelly George matched Mehalick in points, dishing out four assists and scoring two goals.
- Devon Connolly chipped in two goals and added an assist.
- Annie Sheehy caused three turnovers and scooped up four ground balls.
- Romy Villemure also had a great all-around game, causing three turnovers, and totaling three draw controls and two ground balls.
- Delaney Galvin turned away 15 shots in net for Marist.
- The Red foxes overcame a `-2-turnover differential.
- Marist outshot UMass Lowell 33-31.
- Mehalick is the first player in program history to reach the 200 career goals milestone.
- This was Marist's first game against the River Hawks, and as a result its first victory.
- Sheehy's four ground balls and three caused turnovers both matches career-highs.
- Villemure matched her career-high of three caused turnovers in back=to-back games.
- George's six points were her highest total since tallying seven in her freshman season.
- The Red Foxes will host their fourth consecutive home game, welcoming the Vermont Catamounts to Poughkeepsie on Sunday, March 15.
