Baseball Tops Ohio

Red Foxes Defeat Bobcats Before Falling to Wagner in Extra Innings

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee - Marist baseball used a big seventh inning to surge past Ohio and win their opening game of the tournament by a score of 5-2. Alex Pansini got into a great rhythm in seven innings on the rubber with seven strikeouts, while Brian Hart (2-for-4) led the hitters. 

The Red Foxes were scoreless against the Seahawks until they used another strong seventh inning to pull ahead 6-5, and then added three more runs in the eighth. However, Wagner was able to force extra innings and eventually came away with the 10-9 decision.

  • The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Dan McCauley.
  • The Red Foxes batted around in the seventh inning and scored five runs. Dylan Hoy, Robbie Armitage and Niko Amory picked up RBIs while Amory, Brian Hart, Matt Rubayo, Hoy and Robbie scored to give Marist a 5-1 lead.
  • The Bobcats scored an unearned run in the ninth, but the Red Foxes kept a three-run lead and walked away with the victory.
STATS
  • Alex Pansini pitched a gem of a game in 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and just two walks. He scattered four hits throughout that time and allowed just one run for the win.
  • Nick Cantone came out of the bullpen and closed the game in 2.0 innings of work with four strikeouts. He gave up three hits and an unearned run in his stint on the mound.
  • Five pitchers saw time for Ohio, while Eamon Horwedel was given the loss. He tossed 6.0 innings, giving up four hits, two runs and two walks while fanning five.
  • Eddie Kutt was tagged for three runs and four walks in just two thirds of an inning.

  • The Seahawks struck first in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-0, led by Freddy Sabido with a two-run single.
  • Marist scored six runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by an RBI-single from Donnie Stone and a sacrifice fly from Gene Napolitano. 
  • Stone came back around in the eighth and smacked an RBI-double to score Matt Rubayo, while Napolitano sac-bunted to send home Robbie Armitage, and Tyler Kapuscinski singled to drive in Stone.
  • Wagner walked the bases loaded in the ninth, and then added four unearned runs to send the game to extra innings.
  • The Red Foxes reached base in the 10th and 12th, but it was the Seahawks who scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 12th.
STATS
  • Donnie Stone went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to continue his quality play on the offensive end.
  • Though he was assigned the loss, Will Van Beusekom came out of the bullpen for 2.1 lethal innings in which he punched out six of the batters he faced.
  • Six Red Foxes recorded RBIs against Wagner.
  • The Seahawks only earned four of their 10 runs.

Marist plays their final game of the weekend against the hosts East Tennessee State on Sunday at noon.
