Offense Shines as Baseball Sweeps Siena

Red Foxes Record 32 Hits and 32 Runs Over Two Games

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist baseball team swept rival Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field. The hot-hitting offense continued to dominate, as they scored 16 runs in both games and recorded 32 hits over the course of both games.  Marist won the first game by a score of 16-1 and the second game by a score of 16-3. 
 
The sweep improves Marist's record to 5-1 as Siena falls to 6-16.
 
Game One Summary
Marist 16, Siena 1 – W: Cantone (2-0), L: Nadel (0-1)
  • Dylan Hoy started the Red Foxes off with their first hit of the game in the third inning, as he grounded a ball into left field for a single.
  • Nick Cantone relieved starting pitcher Connor McNamara in the fourth inning as Siena had two men on base.  Cantone's strikeout ended the inning.
  • Matt Rubayo brought in the first of the Red Foxes' 14 runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning as he dropped a fly ball into left field, scoring Robbie Armitage to put the Red Foxes up 1-0.
  • The offensive onslaught continued as Reece Armitage doubled to center field head, scoring Brian HartJustin Kapuscinski followed up with a hit into right field, scoring two more runs.
  • The Red Foxes had 10 hits in the fourth inning alone.
  • Siena's lone run came in the sixth as Eddie Sweeney drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
  • Devin Boone had his first career hit as a Red Fox, with a single out to right field.
  • The Red Foxes ended the game with 16 hits.
  • McNamara, Cantone, Drake Quinn, and Trevor Backman combined to allow one run and three hits over seven innings. Cantone pitched 1.1 innings and was credited with the victory.
 
Game Two Summary
Marist 16, Siena 3 (F/7) – W: Kmietek (1-0), L: Khan (0-1)
  • Skyler Pichardo started off strong for the Red Foxes, striking out three of Siena's four batters in the first inning.
  • The Red Foxes' offense continued to shine in the second game as Matt Rubayo slammed a ball straight up the middle of the field, scoring Tyler Kapuscinski from second base. Colin Mackle followed up Rubayo's single with a double smacked into deep right field, scoring two runs.
  • Niko Amory continued the high scoring first inning with a two-run homer over the left field wall, putting the Red Foxes up 5-0 at the end of the first inning.
  • The offense carried into the second inning as Tyler Kapuscinski drove the ball deep into center field, earning a triple as it hit off the wall. Rubayo later drove in Kapuscinski and Robbie Armitage with a line drive into right field.
  • The Red Foxes would score six runs in the second inning, with RBIs from Mackle, Justin Kapuscinski, and Hoy to put the Red Foxes up 11-0 after two.
  • Siena's offense started heating up as they loaded the bases early in the fourth inning. Carson Dunkel drove in two runs as he slammed a deep fly ball off the right-field wall. A sacrifice fly from Devan Kruzinski drove in one more run to cut the Red Fox lead down to nine runs.
  • Ben McNeill added to the Red Foxes' lead as he slammed a solo home run deep to left field.
  • Devin Boone got the Red Foxes out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the sixth inning, as he induced a 6-4-3 double play.
  • Rubayo belted a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring. He drove in six runs in game two.
 
Stats/Notes
  • Eight different Red Foxes recorded a hit in game one, with four Red Foxes having multiple hits.
  • Justin Kapuscinski led all Red Foxes with five RBIs over two games.
  • Trevor Backman made his first appearance of the season, recording one hit and one strikeout in one inning as he closed out game one.
  • McNeill's home run in the fourth inning was his first as a Red Fox
  • Amory hit his third career home run, his second of the season, with his first coming against Saint Peter's on April 18.
  • Austin Phillips made his season debut in game two, relieving Zane Kmietek in the sixth inning.  Phillips allowed one hit in one inning pitched.
  • Rubayo's home run in game two was his third of the season, a new career high.
 
Up Next
  • The Red Foxes stay will stay at home as they host Niagara for a four-game series.
  • Due to inclement weather in the forecast on Sunday, the series will now consist of doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon on both days.
