POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's lacrosse team celebrated senior day on Wednesday afternoon, but ultimately dropped an overtime thriller to the Siena Saints 17-16.
With the loss in the regular season finale, Marist closes the regular season with a 2-4 record. Meanwhile the Saints move to 9-2 on the year.
- Siena's Nicole McNeely scored the first goal of the game, putting the Saints up 1-0 at the 26:46 mark in the first half.
- Devon Connolly struck back just 25 seconds later, tying the game at 1-1 with a beautiful goal off a spin move. After the saints scored another goal, Connolly answered again scoring her second goal of the game to tie the game at 2-2.
- The Saints kept control of the game scoring three straight goals, but Kelly George responded by scoring back-to-back goals, just 40 seconds apart, both coming via assists by Alexandra Di Chiara.
- Marist was able to tie up the game thanks to a goal from Samantha Mehalick, and eventually took the lead on a goal from Maddie Schrader at the 12:58 mark of the first half which gave the Red Foxes an 8-7 lead, which would hold until halftime.
- The Saints scored three straight goals in the first four minutes and 49 seconds of the second half to take a 10-8 lead. However, Marist answered with a 4-0 run, which included a beautiful goal from Kerri Gutenberger, to move in front 12-10.
- After the Red Foxes and Siena traded goals, Annie Brennan scored a man-up goal with 30 seconds left which cut the Marist lead to just one.
- A free position goal with seven seconds left in the game from McNeely tied the game and sent it to overtime.
- Siena's Kerry Gerety scored the game-winning goal, off a beautiful pass from McNeely, with 38 seconds left in overtime giving the Saints the win.
- George's six goals led the way for Marist. Connolly added four and Mehalick and Gutenberger had two each.
- Isabelle Stockman had a game-high 10 draw controls, which was followed up by Romy Villemure who had nine.
- Eight different Marist players had a caused turnover.
- Delaney Galvin had 12 saves in goal for the Red Foxes
- Siena's Nicole McNeely had a game-high seven goals and 10 points.
- Marist was 16-20 in clear attempts while the Saints were 19-20.
- George's six goals were a career-high, besting her previous high mark of five set against Vermont in 2019.
- Mehalick's three assists matched a career-high she also set back in 2019.
- Connolly's four goals also matched her career-high.
- Stockman now has 30 draw controls for the year, which is a single-season career-best.
- Sheridan DeVito picked up two caused turnovers giving her seven for the season which is a career-high mark.
The Red Foxes will be the #8 seed in the MAAC Championships taking place this weekend. Marist is scheduled to take on Iona in the opening round on Friday at 5 p.m. The game will be hosted by #1 Fairfield, and the winner will take on the Stags on Saturday.
