Baseball Drops Game Three at Canisius

Red Foxes Fall in MAAC Quarterfinal Round

BUFFALO, New York – The fifth-seeded Marist baseball team had its season come to an end on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. The Red Foxes were defeated by fourth-seeded Canisius, 10-7, in the decisive game three at the Demske Sports Complex.

  • Marist jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Tyler Kapuscinski hit the second pitch of the game over the wall in right field to get the Red Foxes on the scoreboard. Three batters later, Brian Hart hit a solo shot to right.
  • In the top of the second, Niko Amory's sacrifice fly brought home Colin Mackle, and staked Marist to a 3-0 lead.
  • Canisius had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the second, but Jack Keenan induced an inning-ending fly ball to right.
  • Canisius struck for five runs in the bottom of the third, which included a two-out grand slam by Mike Mazzara.
  • Marist took the lead back with a three-run sixth. Dylan Hoy led off the inning with a single, and Ben McNeill followed with a walk. Kapuscinski's ground-ball single up the middle drove home Hoy. With two outs, Hart's triple into the right field corner brought home McNeill and Kapuscinski, and gave the Red Foxes a 6-5 advantage.
  • Carlin Dick's RBI single brought home Mazzara and tied the score at six in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Canisius re-claimed the lead with a three-run seventh. Mazzara and Kyle Kush had RBI singles, and Jacob Victor added a sacrifice fly.
  • Kush's sacrifice fly extended the Golden Griffins' lead to 10-7 in the eighth.
 
Stats
  • Kapuscinski and Hart each had three hits and two runs scored. Hart drove in three runs, while Kapuscinski had two RBIs.
  • Hoy, Robbie Armitage, and Matt Rubayo added two hits apiece as the Red Foxes finished with 14 hits. Hoy reached safely four times (two hits, one walk, one hit by pitch).
  • Keenan struck out four over three innings. Nick Cantone followed with three innings out of the bullpen.
  • Mazzara went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Canisius offense.
 
Notes
  • Kapuscinski's home run was his first of the season, and first leadoff homer of his career.
  • Kapuscinski's career batting average of .340 ranks sixth in program history. His career hit total stands at 213.
  • Cantone's outing of three-plus innings was his longest since 2018.
  • Hoy led the Red Foxes with seven hits in the series, as he hit .583 (7-for-12). He finished the season with a 10-game hitting streak.
  • In the series, the team that scored first lost every game. The winning team in each game erased a deficit of at least two runs.

  • Marist's season ends at 18-11.
  • Canisius is 19-14, and advances to the MAAC Championship Round.
