Baseball Completes the Opening Series Sweep of Norfolk State

First 3-0 Start Since the 2003 Season

NORFOLK, Virginia - The Marist baseball team completed the sweep of Norfolk State on Sunday, taking down the Spartans by a final score of 12-8 on the road.

  • Dylan Hoy led off the game with a walk, followed by a Robbie Armitage single. With two on and nobody out, Brian Hart powered a homerun to deep right field to give Marist a 3-0 lead.
  • Norfolk State answered back in the bottom half of the first inning with a leadoff triple from Dionte Brown to start a four hit, four run inning to give the Spartans the lead.
  • Robbie Armitage picked up where he left off in the first inning with an RBI-double to score Marco Ali and tie the game in the second inning. However, Norfolk State wouldn't go away. In the bottom of the third, the Spartans strung together a rally to retake the lead, 5-4 heading into the fourth inning. 
  • Marist would go on to score three runs in both the fourth and fifth inning, and two runs in the sixth on five hits. Reece Armitage, Marco Ali, Gene Napolitano, and Niko Amory all singled during the rally, and Gavin Noriega doubled to bring home Nathan Lincoln.
  • Norfolk State would plate three runs in the bottom of the eigth, but it was too little too late for the Spartans.

  • Zane Kmietek picked up his first victory of the year. Kmietek went 2.0 innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, and no walks.
  • Kmietek, Jack Keenan, and Alex Pansini combined for 6 innings in relief, striking out nine batters and only allowing one earned run on three hits.
  • Robbie Armitage went 2-4 with two RBI's and runs, Marco Ali went 2-4 with an RBI, and Gavin Noriega went 2-3 with a double and RBI. 
  • Brian Hart's three-run homerun was the first of the season for the Red Foxes.
  • Marist is 3-0 for the first time since the 2003 season, when they swept Old Dominion in the first series.

The Red Foxes head to Greenville, South Carolina to take on Notre Dame and Wofford next weekend. Marist faces off with Notre Dame on Friday and Sunday, with the first pitch at 4:00 pm and 12 pm, respectively. First pitch on Saturday against Wofford is set for 11:00 am.
