SAN DIEGO, California -- Marist Women's Rowing traveled to San Diego, CA this past weekend to compete at the San Diego Crew Classic. The women traveled with the 1
st and 2
nd varsity 8s.
Â
The Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Katie Moody,
Summer Starrett,
Emma Jauch,
Natalia Miklos, Gabby Insero,
Caroline Voorhis,
Ashley Surette,
Lauren Muhr, and
Olivia Nasternak. On Saturday, the competition in the heat consisted of San Diego, Bates, Oklahoma, UCSD, Old Dominion and MIT lightweights. The 8 got off to a great start and settled into a strong base pace which was maintained through the halfway point (1000m) of the race. The crew faltered a bit in the third 500, but was able to push through and continue to fight to the finish line. Posting a time of 7:31.6 placed us five seconds behind sixth place finisher, Bates. The post-race review with the crew consisted of pointing out the positive portions of the first race and assessing the parts which did not go as well as we would have liked, particularly the middle move. The crew was upbeat and determined to improve upon these parts of the race in the final race on Sunday.
Â
The second varsity 8 consisted of coxswain
Abigail Cieplinski,
Avalon Johnson,
Elizabeth Kelly, Chrissy Schone,
Lydia Giguere,
Kassandra Nicholson,
Genevieve Anderson,
Francesca D'Ugo, and
Hilary Anderson. On Saturday, the heat consisted of USC, Cal, UCLA, Oklahoma, San Diego, Sac State and U. of Portland. Unlike the varsity 8 event, this event included 2V's from the large programs and the heat results were indicative of this. USC, Cal, UCLA, and Oklahoma fought each other down the course, while San Diego, Sacramento State, Marist, and Portland battled for lanes for the final on Sunday. The 2V was relatively pleased with how its race went, however, wanted a bit more in the results department. With at time of 7:37.9, the crew placed seventh in the heat, two seconds ahead of Portland. The post-race review concluded with a commitment to an improved start and an improved sprint the following day.
On Sunday, the varsity 8's final included Old Dominion, MIT lightweights., Loyola Marymount, Bates, Portland and Seattle University and our crew was determined to improve upon Saturday's results. Improve they did. Again, the crew settled into a very strong base pace and raced with the pack the entire length of the course. The crew was very pleased with its middle move right after the halfway point, something it had committed to doing prior the race. This led to more confidence entering the final 500m and we were able to edge out Bates by one second and Seattle U. by three seconds in a time of 7:12.04.
Â
The 2V's final race included San Diego, UCSD, Sacramento St., Loyola, MIT, Portland, and Bates. Our crew blasted off the line with a better start and the entire field was overlapped after the first 500m and for the the majority of the middle 1000m. Like their varsity 8 counterparts, this boat ended up being very satisfied with its move at the halfway point. The rate lifted to 35spm and the boat gained some ground and carried that momentum into the final push where it was able to sprint to a time of 7:24.2 , placing two seconds ahead of Bates and three seconds ahead of Portland.Â
