LEONIA, New Jersey - Marist women's rowing traveled to Overpeck Park this past weekend to compete at the St. Joe's Invitational. The women traveled with the First and Second varsity 8s as well as a Varsity 4 and a Second Varsity 4. The teams competing were UMass, GWU, URI, St. Joes and UConn.
The Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Katie Moody, Summer Starrett, Lydia Giguere, Natalia Miklos, Emma Jauch, Kassie Nicholson, Gabby Insero, Lauren Muhr, and Ashley Surette. The morning race resulted in a third-place finish with a time of 6:48.1 behind UMass and URI. This set up the afternoon final against UConn and St. Joe's. The crew got off to its best start of the season so far, and managed to lead wire to wire and win with a time of 7:29.3
The Second Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Catie Stiffler/Abigail Cieplinski, Avalon Johnson, Elizabeth Kelly, Mary Schone, Molly O'Donoghue, Caroline Voorhis, Genevieve Anderson, Francesca D'Ugo, and Hilary Anderson. We talk a lot about controlling what we can and handling what we cannot control better than everyone else. Weather is one of the uncontrollable things a crew must handle. Unfortunately, this crew allowed the conditions to get the best of them in their first race. We were unable to execute an effective race and finished third behind URI and UMass in a time of 7:23.1. After regrouping on shore and talking through the first race, this crew bounced back and raced a much better piece in the second race against UConn and St. Joe's. A much improved start, a solid middle of the race move and a strong, effective sprint placed us second behind UMass and ahead of UConn with a time of 7:29.3
The Varsity 4 consisted of coxswain Phoebe Castellano, Casey Hodge, Sophia Ledda, Jennifer Liguori, and Rebecca Paul. In the first race this crew placed third behind URI and UMass with a time of 8:10.8 which set them up for an afternoon matchup against UConn and GWU. This race turned out to be one of the most exciting of the day, as Marist and UConn battled it down the course from start to finish. The final result was GWU, 8:10.2, UConn, 8:15.08 and Marist 8:15.9. The sprint by the Marist crew was impressive.
The 2V 4 consisted of coxswain Emma Spiro, Jessica Zygmunt, Victoria Hamilton, Alexandra Gibeault, and Emily Liguori. In the first race this crew was outmatched by UMass; however, this crew's attitude and desire to improve with every racing opportunity enabled them to gain two seconds on St. Joe's, three seconds on UMass and six seconds on GWU in a more competitive final race in the afternoon.
