Baseball Takes Game Two From Monmouth

Red Foxes Put Up Eight Runs, 14 Hits

WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey - The Marist baseball team got off to a hot start and kept its foot on the pedal en route to a 8-3 victory over Monmouth to take game two of the teams' three-game weekend series.

Summary
  • In the top of the second, Marist got the scoring started when Johnny Decker reached home plate after a Monmouth throwing error. 

  • In the same inning, Gene Napolitano singled to center field to score Dylan Hoy and put the Red Foxes up 2-0. 

  • A Monmouth solo home run in the bottom of the second cut the lead in half. 

  • The Red Foxes' offense got going, plating four runs in the top of the fourth. The scoring got started with a Reece Armitage sacrifice fly, followed by a Robbie Armitage ground-rule double to score two. Gavin Noriega singled to right field to bring in Armitage. 

  • In the top of the fifth inning, Johnny Decker homered to left center to extend the Red Fox lead to 7-1. 

  • In the top of the sixth, Brian Hart hit an RBI double to right center to extend the lead to 8-1.  

  • Monmouth scored off an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-2 in bottom of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth they got their final run of the game with a solo home run to make it 8-3.

  • Erubiel Candelario pitched a beauty for the Red Foxes, pitching 5.0 innings allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out nine. 

  • The Red Foxes scored eight runs on 14 hits. 

  • Six different Red Foxes recorded at least one RBI, with Robbie Armitage getting two. 

  • All nine batters in the line up got at least one hit, with Gavin Noriega leading the way with three. Gene Napolitano, Reece Armitage, and Dylan Hoy got two hits each.
