Baseball Has Season Come to an End

Red Foxes Lose to Canisius, Niagara

POMONA, New York – The Marist baseball team saw their season come to an end on Thursday after suffering back-to-back losses in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament. The Red Foxes fell in the first game to Canisius by a score of 12-1, then suffered a season-ending loss to Niagara by a score of 7-4.

Game 1: Canisius 12, Marist 1
  • Erubiel Candelario struck out three batters in the top of the first. Gene Napolitano started the Red Foxes' offense with a double, but they were unable to get him across.
  • Candelario struck out the final batter in the second inning with the bases loaded, bringing his total to four through two innings. In the bottom of the second, Johnny Decker singled and later scored on a rope by Marco Ali that resulted in an error and run for the Red Foxes.
  • In the top of the fourth, Canisius capitalized on a Marist error by putting up four runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead. Canisius kept the foot on the gas in the fifth, hitting a three-run home run to make it a 7-1 advantage midway through the game.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Reece Armitage drew a leadoff walk and Robbie Armitage singled, however the Red Foxes couldn't capitalized and went down in order after that.
  • For the third straight inning, Canisius got their bats rolling. The Golden Griffins added to their lead by scoring three runs on three hits, giving them a 10-1 advantage. In the seventh, Canisius added on two runs on four hits to run-rule Marist 12-1.
  • Robbie Armitage tripled to center in the home half of the seventh, but the Red Foxes were unable to push him across to score.
  • Candelario recorded six strikeouts through 4.2 innings and only three earned runs.
  • Robbie Armitage led the Red Foxes on offense, going 3-4 with a triple.

Game 2: Niagara 7, Marist 4
  • After two straight hits to start the game, Dylan Hoy made a tremendous catch on a line drive and doubled the runner up on second. Alex Pansini then struck out the next batter to retire the threat.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Red Foxes offense started to click. Brian Hart and Dylan Hoy singled, Peter Dudunakis walked, Marco Ali had a three RBI double, and Gene Napolitano followed that up with a double of his own. The Red Foxes scored all four runs in the inning with two outs.
  • Pansini held Niagara at bay until the top of the fourth when an RBI single tied the game at one. However, there could have been more runs had Reece Armitage not thrown a runner out trying to advance to second on a ball hit in the gap.
  • In the top of the fifth, Niagara doubled twice and singled twice to score four runs and take the lead, 5-4.
  • After walks by Gene Napolitano and Reece Armitage to start the sixth inning, the Red Foxes were retired in order to end the threat.
  • A sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, and a tough play in the top of the seventh plated two more runs for Niagara.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Reece Armitage got the inning started with a lead-off bunt. Robbie Armitage then walked, and the Red Foxes would load the bases, however could not get a run across.
  • Niko Amory led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple but wasn't able to come across for a run.
  • The Red Foxes were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth to fall, 7-4.
