Marist Earns 14-9 Victory Over Merrimack

Red Foxes Win Second Straight to Improve to 3-1 in the MAAC

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Marist University women's lacrosse team earned a 14-9 MAAC victory at Merrimack on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi led the Red Foxes with a career-high five goals. Junior captain attack Kate Gaven recorded six points on two goals and four assists, while junior attack Kathryn Staker added one goal and three assists. Junior midfielder Madison Leale finished with two goals and one assist. Senior attack Jesse Manger, senior captain midfielder Caitlin McNaboe, junior captain attack Anne Shine, and junior attack Gabby Kingston each added one goal, with Shine and Kingston also recording an assist.

With the win, Marist improves to 4-8 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Marist struck early as Leale opened the scoring at 12:57 off an assist from Gaven, followed by a goal from Pirozzi at 12:04 to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead.
  • After a Merrimack goal, McNaboe extended the advantage at 7:49 off another assist from Gaven.
  • The Warriors responded at 5:35, but Staker scored at 1:39 off a feed from Leale to give Marist a 4-2 lead after one.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Merrimack cut the deficit to one at 10:10, but Gaven answered with a woman-up goal at 9:44 off an assist from Staker.
  • The Warriors pulled within one again at 8:56 before Kingston scored at 8:08 off a pass from Gaven.
  • Merrimack responded at 7:17, but Shine scored at 6:42, assisted by Gaven, to extend the lead to 7-5.
  • Pirozzi added her second goal of the game at 3:27 to send Marist into halftime with an 8-5 advantage.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Merrimack opened the second half with a goal at 8:06 to cut the deficit to 8-6.
  • Pirozzi answered with a free-position goal at 5:53, and Gaven added a goal at 4:04 to give the Red Foxes a 10-6 lead.
  • The Warriors scored on a free-position attempt at 2:12 to make it 10-7 entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Marist pulled away early in the fourth as Manger scored at 14:39 off an assist from Staker.
  • Pirozzi followed with back-to-back goals, first at 14:01 off an assist from Shine and again at 9:23 off a feed from Staker, extending the lead to 13-7.
  • Leale added her second goal at 8:40 off an assist from Kingston to push the advantage to 14-7.
  • Merrimack added two late goals, but the Red Foxes secured the 14-9 victory.
STATS
  • Marist outshot Merrimack 30-27 and held a 23-10 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Red Foxes recorded 15 caused turnovers and nine ground balls.
  • Each team won 12 draw controls.
