FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Marist University men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over Fairfield to extend its winning streak to six matches and clinch at least a share of the MAAC regular season title on Friday afternoon.
The Red Foxes improved to 12-5 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in conference play, while the Stags dropped to 5-12 overall and 4-1 in the MAAC.
Marist opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Gregor Heinemann and sophomore Ian Layton earned a 6-3 victory at No. 2, while graduate student Jose Catala and sophomore Fateh Singh followed with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Senior Nick Suhanitski and junior Thomas Bevan fell 6-2 at No. 1.
In singles play, Marist won three matches to secure the team victory. Catala earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1, while sophomore Anirudh Nallaparaju added a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4. Bevan delivered the clinching point with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 comeback win at No. 5.
Fairfield earned points at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6. Layton fell in three sets at No. 2, 7-5, 1-6, 5-7, while freshman Alejandro Abella Fernandez dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3. Heinemann was edged at No. 6, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6.
