All students-athletes must create an account with our electronic medical records system, ATS. Full clearance for participation in team activities will only be granted once everything has been completed and submitted. The Sports Medicine staff has the right to hold any student-athlete out of activity until the full medical history has been reviewed.

Physical

  • All incoming student-athletes (freshman, transfer, and walk-on) must provide a current physical to the Office of Sports Medicine to be cleared for athletic participation. This must be completed by an MD, PA, NP and completed within one year from the student-athlete completing their requirements for the office.
  • In addition to the new student-athlete paperwork and physical, all NEW students are required to submit health forms to Student Health Services. Please see their website for more information on requirements: https://www.marist.edu/student-life/services/health-services/forms
  • Sickle Cell Trait

The NCAA requires all potential student-athletes to submit a sickle cell test prior to participation. Tests and results can be required from pediatrician office, birth hospital, or state of birth. If unable to locate resources, here is a link to local resource testing: https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2016/7/27/sickle-cell-trait.aspx

Marist University maintains a sports accident insurance policy for all covered athletic injuries. This policy is excess to any other valid and collectible insurance – it is a secondary policy and all claims must be submitted to the athlete’s primary insurance first.

Submit medical charges to any other insurance policy the patient is covered under first (regardless if the patient is the primary member or a dependent);
Once response is received, submit a valid HCFA-1500 or UB92/04, along with a copy of primary insurance Explanation of Benefits, directly to Associate AD - Student-Athlete Health and Performance Jeffrey Carter:

NCAA Drug Testing Program

  • The NCAA drug-testing program, along with clear policies and effective education, protects student-athletes who play by the rules by playing clean. The purpose of the drug-testing program is to deter student-athletes from using performance-enhancing drugs, and it impacts the eligibility of student-athletes who try to cheat by using banned substances. The NCAA tests for steroids, peptide hormones and masking agents year-round and also tests for stimulants and recreational drugs during championships.
  • To learn more about specific medications or supplements that may be banned substances, visit Drug Free Sport AXIS, (NCAA Division I, ncaa1) which provides up-to-date research on supplements and over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
  •  NCAA Banned Substances
  • The NCAA bans classes of drugs because they can harm student-athletes and can create an unfair advantage in competition. Some legitimate medications contain NCAA banned substances, and student-athletes may need to use these medicines to support their academics and their general health. Effective August 2009, the NCAA has passed a stricter policy on documentation for medical exception of banned drugs. This exception occurs most commonly in cases of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to report the use of any prescribed banned ADHD stimulant medications to Marist College Sports Medicine upon matriculation or the start of ADHD treatment. The student-athlete must NOT wait until the time of NCAA drug testing to report use of the stimulant medication.
  • Please see the attached documentation to ensure you have completed the necessary paperwork regarding your diagnosis.
