Dr. Michael Maynard is a board-certified Orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of sports medicine injuries and advanced arthroscopic techniques for shoulder, knee, and hip disorders.
He has served as a team physician at Marist College since 1991. Maynard's responsibilities include the oversight of the orthopedic injury clinic and covering athletics team events, mainly football and men's and women's basketball games. Additionally, he is the primary doctor who conducts clearing physicals for the student-athletes.
Maynard is a 1975 graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.. He later spent two years as an engineering graduate student and ROTC instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Maynard went from MIT to Cornell University Medical College where he received his MD degree in 1985. His orthopedic residency training was taken at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS).
Thereafter, he continued at HSS for a fellowship year in joint replacement under Chitranjan Ranawat, MD, and Thomas Sculco, MD, and a second fellowship year in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery under Russell Warren, MD.
Maynard practices at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery and is among the first surgeons to develop skill and experience in the arthroscopic treatment of disorders affecting the hip joint. Dr. Maynard has served as the Chief of Orthopedics at Helen Hayes Hospital and at the Bronx VA Hospital, where he was responsible for the education and supervision of HSS physicians who provide orthopedic care to patients.
He was the major donor to the Marist athletic training facility, which is named after Maynard. He has also contributed golf carts and a portable treatment cart to the department.
