Basalo is a product of Miami, FL, where he attended Christopher Columbus High School. He graduated in 2018, and spent the last two years swimming for Loyola Maryland. One of his career highlights include posting a career-best time of 9:52.48 in the 1000-yard free at the ECAC Championships in 2019. His best mark in the Patriot League Championships was a 9:57.31 time in the 1650-yard free. His older brother, Miguel, swam for the Red Foxes for four years and graduated in 2019.
