Nate Fields is in his eighth season as an assistant coach at Marist, and is now is his 11th year of association with the program dating back to his days as a student. This season marks Fields’ fourth as offensive coordinator, and second as running backs coach.
In 2015, Fields directed an explosive offensive attack which featured 52 plays from scrimmage of at least 20 yards. Running back Marcellus Calhoun, who averaged 5.5 yards per carry and scored 11 touchdowns, was an Honorable Mention All-PFL selection.
In the 2013-14 seasons, Fields coached the team’s offensive linemen in addition to his duties as offensive coordinator. During this time, Fields aided in the development of four All-PFL selections: right tackle Phede Celestin (first team, 2013), left tackle Peter Evans (first team, 2013), left guard Rocco Manfre (second team, 2013) and center Mike Mangino (second team, 2014). Celestin was named a Football Championship Subdivision All-American by The Sports Network.
In 2013, the Red Foxes enjoyed their most prolific season offensively in program history. Marist set program records with 378 points scored and 4,582 yards of total offensive. The Red Foxes also set program records by scoring at least 30 points in five consecutive games, and eight contests overall.
From 2009-12, Fields served as the team’s wide receivers coach, and also held the responsibilities of special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. Under Fields’ leadership, Marist’s wide receivers have left numerous marks on the team’s record book. In 2012, Michael Rios set the program’s career record for touchdown receptions, the single-season program records for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and the single-game record for receiving yards. Rios was a unanimous First Team All-PFL selection, and became the first player in program history to sign an NFL contract when he signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals.
In his first season as receivers coach in 2009, Fields' tutelage helped James LaMacchia become the first player in program history to have 1,000 yards receiving in a season en route to being a unanimous First Team All-Pioneer Football League selection. In 2010, LaMacchia set the program's single-season record with 74 receptions and broke the career marks for receptions, as he once against was named First Team All-PFL. Fields also mentored Kevin Fitzpatrick, who received an invitation to Buffalo Bills rookie minicamp in the spring of 2012.
Fields spent the 2006-08 seasons as a student assistant on the Red Foxes' staff. He spent one season on the Marist video staff, filming games and practices, before moving onto the field for the 2007 season. He worked specifically with the offensive line, assisting offensive line coach Bill Roos in practice with preparation and drills. On game day, Fields staffed the coaches' booth, charting game situations as well as defensive personnel, front and blitzes. Off the field, Fields assisted the coaching staff with game planning, opponent film breakdown, and all facets of video editing.
Fields earned both a Bachelors of Communications and Masters of Business Administration at Marist. He and his wife, Haley, reside in Poughkeepsie, with their son, Jeffrey.
