Marist Men's Soccer Defeats Iona, 5-2

Poughkeepsie, NY---The Marist College men's soccer team (6-4-0) defeated Iona College, 5-2, this evening, on Leonidoff Field. The win is the first of season in conference play for the Red Foxes, improving to 1-2-0.

Marist was paced by senior Steven Murk (Clark, NJ), who had two goals and one assist, and by senior Joe Crespo (Bolton, Conn), with one goal and three assists for the evening.

The Red Foxes came back twice, first after Iona's first goal by Vincent Dimartinis. Murk netted his first goal in the 23rd minute, with an assist from Crespo. The Gaels temporarily came back as Jason Nardis scored their last goal 25:42 into the contest, only to be answered by Murk 10 minutes later, assisted by goalkeeper Carlos DeBrito (Union, NJ), and Crespo. The Red Foxes next goal was made by Crespo, touching the net at 37:03, assisted by Murk, leaving Marist in control at the end of the first half, 3-2.

In the second half senior Sean Murphy (Hopewell Junction, NY), shot the fourth goal of the evening assisted by Crespo and senior Joshua Van (Simsbury, Conn). Junior Christopher Zitkevitz (Elmer, NJ) scored the final goal of the match, assisted by freshman Patrick Safino (Simsbury, Conn).

DeBrito had an excellent evening, with nine saves in his 90 minutes of play, raising him to an average of 7.44 saves/game. As of October 9th, DeBrito was second in the nation for saves per game, averaging 7.22.

The Red Foxes will next take on the Stags of Fairfield University this Saturday, October 13, at 1:00 pm, on Leonidoff Field.
