Ludwig's Goal in the 86th Minute Lifts Women's Soccer over Niagara

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's soccer team defeated Niagara 3-2 this evening on Leonidoff Field in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Red Foxes won their school record fifth consecutive game and improved to 7-7 overall and 7-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Niagara fell to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the MAAC.

After playing a scoreless first half, Marist took a 1-0 lead when senior Kasey Sibrinsz (Manchester, Conn.) scored on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Katie Runeari then tied the game for Niagara, scoring on a header in the 59th minute. The Purple Eagles then took a 2-1 lead two minutes later after Rosie Luzak scored the go ahead goal.

The Red Foxes responded in the 72nd minute when freshman Laura Clark (Syracuse, NY) found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. Clark received a pass from Sibrinsz, who handled a corner kick pass from junior Jenny Shanks (Sound Beach, NY). Freshman Libby Ludwig (Commack, NY) then scored the game winner in the 86th minute for Marist on a breakaway after she received a pass from freshman Courtney Moore (Suffield, Conn.).

Junior goalkeeper Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.) made four saves in the contest for the Red Foxes, while Melissa Himes stopped six shots for Niagara.

The Purple Eagles held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks as both teams took 15 shots in the game.

The Red Foxes will be back in action again this weekend when they host Canisius on Leonidoff Field this Sunday, October 21st at 1:00 PM.
