Women's Soccer Remains Unbeaten With 2-0 Win Over Canisius

Oct. 21, 2001

Poughkeepsie, NY The Marist College women's soccer team captured its first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season crown, with a 2-0 defeat of Canisius College, this afternoon on Leonidoff Field.

Freshman Libby Ludwig (Commack, NY) provided her second game-winning goal in as many games, as she dribbled to within 15-yards of the crease and put her shot in the upper right corner of the Canisius goal. Tara Savidge (New Hyde Park, NY), a sophomore, gave the Red Foxes an insurance goal in the 32nd minute of play when she accepted a cross from Ludwig and put it in the back of the net.

Marist dominated play for the entire contest, giving up just four shots all stopped by Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.), who earned her fifth conference shutout of the season. The Red Foxes out shot the Golden Griffins (3-11-1, 2-6-1) 24-4, and had 12 corner kick opportunities, while holding Canisius to none on the afternoon.

The Red Foxes improve to 8-7 overall on the year and remain unbeaten in league play at 8-0. The regular season title is the first in the programs history, and just the fifth team in conference history to win the regular season crown.

Marist will look for the perfect conference season, when they travel to Siena on Wednesday, October 24th for a 3:00 pm contest. The Red Foxes will close the regular season with a home match against non-conference foe, Central Connecticut State, Friday, October 26th. Game time is set for 6:00 pm and the contest will be preceded by a ceremony honoring the Red Foxes seniors.
