Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's soccer was defeated 1-0 by Central Connecticut State this evening on Leonidoff Field.
After the teams played a scoreless first half, Central Connecticut received the lone goal of the evening from Kelly Shimmin at 61:47. Shimmin received a pass and scored from five yards out. The Red Foxes had two good scoring opportunities late in the game. First a shot by freshman Libby Ludwig (Commack, NY) just missed wide left and then with under two minutes remaining a corner kick by junior Jenny Shanks Sound Beach, NY) was knocked away by a Central Connecticut defender.
The Red Foxes held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but were out shot 14-10 by the Blue Devils.
Marist junior goalkeeper Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.), made seven saves in the contest, while Sabrina Mariani and Sarah Decormier combined for three saves for Central Connecticut (6-7-1, 5-2 NEC).
Marist ended the regular season with an 8-9 overall record and won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season crown with an 8-1 mark. Next up for the Red Foxes is the MAAC Championships at the Wide World of Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, FL. They will be the number one seed in the tournament, which starts on Wednesday, October 31st and runs through Sunday, November 4th. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA tournament.
