Men's Soccer Rallies To Defeat Canisius 4-3

Oct. 28, 2001

BUFFALO, N.Y.--The Marist College men's soccer team fell behind 3-1 early in the secon half, before rallying to defeat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Canisius, this afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Griffs (5-10-2, 3-6 MAAC)opened the scoring in the 13th minute and took a 2-0 lead at the 14:53 mark. Marist (9-5-1, 4-3-1) cut the Canisius lead to 2-1 at the 24:59 mark on a goal by Patrick McCall as the two teams went to the halftime break. Canisius struck first again in the second half taking a 3-1 lead, before the Red Foxes would proceed to score three unanswered goals in the final 25 minutes to seal the win. Sean Murphy headed in the second Marist goal in the 66th minute, while Joseph Crespo got the equalizer at the 80:01 mark on a cross from David Musinski.

An ill-timed intentional handball at 83:31 by Canisius' Justin Phillips (Scarborough, Ont.) resulted in a red card for Phillips and the Griffs were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. McCall scored the game-winner under two minutes later to give Marist the victory. Canisius goalie Dave Borchard (Williamsville, N.Y.) made nine saves in the loss, while Carlos DeBrito stopped six shots in the Red Foxes' win.

Marist will play at St. Peter's on Saturday, November 3rd at 1:00 pm. A win will put the Red Foxes into postseason play and a chance to defend their 2000 MAAC Title.
