Women's Soccer Defeats Manhattan

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College Women's soccer team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Manhattan, 2-1, on Leonidoff Field , this evening. The Red Foxes remained undefeated in the MAAC at 3-0 with the victory, while Manhattan falls to 3-4 in the MAAC.

Playing in their first game under the lights at Leonidoff Field, the Red Foxes (3-7) received a goal in the first half from freshman Courtney Moore (Suffield, Conn.) when she accepted a pass from junior Jenny Greenbaum (Northport, NY) that led to a breakaway.

Manhattan (4-6-1) came back and tied the game at 1-1 when Kristin Stroppel scored on a header off a tipped ball in the 72nd minute.

The game winning goal for Marist was scored in the 81st minute by senior Kasey Sibrinsz (Manchester, Conn.) when she found the back of the net off a pass from junior Kelly Naughton (Harrisville, RI).

Junior goalkeeper Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.) recorded seven saves on the day for the Red Foxes, while Jeanne Marie Gilbert stopped four shots for Manhattan.

In the back and forth battle Marist was outshot by the Jaspers 14-12, but held a 3-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

The Red Foxes will be back in action next Friday, October 12th at 2:00 PM when the travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to face MAAC foe Rider. Their next game at home is against Niagara at 6:00 PM on Friday, October 19th.
