Orlando, FL - The Marist College Women's soccer team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2001 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win over Canisius today at the Wide World of Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, FL.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first 45:00 minutes of play when the Red Foxes received a goal in the 40th minute from senior Courtney Gutt (Glastonbury, Conn.) off an assist from junior Jenny Shanks (Sound Beach, NY).
Marist who out shot the Golden Griffs 26-4, took a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute when junior Molley Hanley (Simsbury, Conn.) assisted freshman Courtney Moore (Suffield, Conn.) on the game winning goal.
Junior goalkeeper Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.) made two saves on the day for the Red Foxes, while Christine Moran made 12 stops in goal for Canisius. Marist also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
In other action at the tournament Rider upset Fairfield 1-0, Loyola outlasted Niagara 5-4 in OT, and Manhattan dropped Siena 1-0.
The Red Foxes will face Manhattan at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 3rd. Loyola and Rider will square off in the other semifinal match at 12:30 PM. The 2001 MAAC Championship will be played at 12:00 PM on Sunday, November 4th with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
