Poughkeepsie, NY --Duquesne University (7-2, 5-0 MAAC) scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Marist College football team (2-6, 1-4 MAAC) 21-10 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League game, on Leonidoff Field this afternoon.
Marist opened the scoring in the first quarter on a two-yard run by Rommel Sumague (Tenafly, NJ).
Jeremy Conley (Pittsburgh, PA) scored on a six-yard pass from Neil Loebig (McDonald, PA)for Duquesne with 24 seconds remaining in the first half, to even the score at seven going into the half.
Marist again took the lead on a 37-yard field goal by Brett Biggs (Bethlehem, PA) five-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter.
Duquesne took the lead for good on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Loebig to Yardon Brantly (Reading, PA) at the start of the fourth quarter. Josh Rue ( Pittsburgh, PA) scored less than two minutes later on a nine-yard run, to make the score 21-10.
Marist was led by Sean Stellato (Salem, MA), who caught four passes for 102 yards. The Red Foxes were held to 79 yards rushing on 40 carries, led by Alfredo Riullano (Callicoon, NY) with 28 yards on nine carries. Kevin Bielen (Glen Rock, NJ) threw for 193 yards, completing 11 of 24 attempts, and was intercepted three times.
Defensively for the Red Foxes, Shawn Lawson (Spring Valley, NY) recovered two fumbles and got credit for a team-high 13 tackles.
Rue led the Dukes with 14 rushes for 102 yards. Donte Small (Duquesne, PA), rushed 20 times for 93 yards, finishing 15 yards shy of 1,000 yards on the season. The Red Foxes are the only MAAC Football League team to hold Small to under 100 yards each of the four times he faced them during his career. Brantley led the Dukes in receiving, going for 136 yards on six receptions. Loebig was 14 of 32 on pass attempts for 237 yards.
The Red Foxes are next in action on Saturday, November 17, 2001, when they take on the visiting Saints of Siena College, on Leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College at 12:00 p.m.
