Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College Women's basketball team won their season opener against St. John's 75-49 this evening in the McCann Center. St. John's jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Red Foxes then went ahead for good after taking a 19-17 lead in the midst of a 36-10 run in the first period. Marist lead by as many as 19 points before going ahead 43-29 at halftime.
Junior Sarah Tift (North Kingstown, RI) scored a game high 14 points and added six rebounds for the Red Foxes. Sophomores Kerry Sullivan (Crompond, NY), who had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ), who added 12 points also played well for Marist.
St. John's leading scorers were Sherri Brown with 11 points and Creasie Fowler and Amanda Rawson, who each added 10 points a piece.
After the slow start Marist recovered to shoot .500 percent in the first half and .435 percent for the game. The Red Fox defense was tough the whole the game as they limited the Red Storm to .302 percent shooting for the game and .250 percent in the second half.
The Red Foxes next game will be on Tuesday, November 20th at 7:00 PM when they travel to Durham, NH to face the University of New Hampshire. They will return to action at the McCann Center on Saturday, November 24th when they host Providence at 2:00 PM
