Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team captured the Pepsi Marist Classic with a 69-59 win over Columbia this evening at the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Senior Sean Kennedy (Northport, NY) led the Red Foxes with 19 points and 10 assists and was named tournament MVP.
The Red Foxes went ahead 12-10 in the first half and never relinquished the lead as they headed into the break ahead 34-27. Marist went up by as much as 13 in the second half before earning the 10-point victory.
Marist also received 16 points from Nick Eppehimer (Pottstown, PA), 13 points from David Bennett (Salt Lake City, UT), and 10 points from Rick Smith (Bladensburg, MD).
Chris Wiedemann was the leading scorer for Columbia with 16 points. Craig Austin also reached double figures with 13 points, as did Mike McBrein with 10.
Marist shot 45.1 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the foul line to help seal the win. Columbia hit on 44.2 percent of their shots.
Drexel defeated Northeastern 87-76 in the consolation game
Joining Kennedy on the All-Tournament team were teammates Smith and Eppehimer. Chris Wiedemann and Craig Austin of Columbia and Jamil Moore of Drexel rounded out the All-Tournament team.
The Red Foxes won the annual tournament for the first time since the 1998-99 season.
Marist will be back in action on Wednesday, November 21st at 7:30 PM when they host South Alabama at the McCann Center.
