Hempstead, NY--- The Marist College men's soccer team was victorious in its season opener, with a sudden death overtime win against Hofstra University, winning 3-2.
MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Joe Crespo (Bolton, Conn.), kicked the winning goal on a penalty shot to slate the first win of the season for the Red Foxes. Marist whet scoreless for the first half, and trailed 2-0 at the intermission. Senior Steve Murk (Clark, NJ.), put the Red Foxes on the board at 47:04 into the contest, with an unassisted goal.
Crespo forced the overtime tying the match 2-2 when he converted a penalty kick with 71 seconds left in regulation. With 58 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Crespo was fouled on a breakaway setting up the game winning penalty kick.
Marist goalkeeper Carlos DeBrito (Union, NJ.), gave up two goals in 104 minutes of play, making eight saves for the day. The Red Foxes out shot Hofstra 25-21, despite having half the number of corner kick opportunities, 10-5.
The Red Foxes return to action Monday, when they travel to take on William and Mary. The game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
