Broward County, FL.--The Marist College football team dropped its road opener, falling 31-9 to Florida Atlantic University, this afternoon at Pro Player Stadium in Broward County, Fl. Brett Biggs (Bethlehem, PA) provided all of the scoring for the Red Foxes, going 3-3 on field goal attempts, including a 41-yard attempt, the third longest converted kick in program history.
The Red Foxes (0-2) fell behind early after the Owls returned the opening kickoff 49-yards and took four plays to take a 7-0 lead. Marist answered with a 54-yard 5:54 drive, culminating in the first of Biggs field goals. Biggs got the Red Foxes to within 12 points as he knocked through two more field goals, one from 37-yards (11:06) and the second from 40-yards (1:41) to head into the intermission trailing 21-9.
FAU (2-1) scored with 1:35 left in the first quarter and then again just 1:05 into the second quarter, taking a 21-3 lead. The Owls scored 10-points, seven off of a Marist fumble, all in the third quarter, to give the final margin, 31-9.
Marist finished the contest with 312 total yards of offense, 246 coming on the ground. Chris Price (Danbury, Conn.) led the Red Foxes with 86 rushing yards, leading seven rushers into double-digit yardage. Eric Bost (New Haven, Conn.) was the lone Red Fox to have multiple receptions, catching two passes for 46-yards.
Florida Atlantic had 421 total yards, 227 in the air, on the afternoon. FAU also had 181-yards of kickoff return yards in the contest.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, September 29th, when they open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action, hosting St. Peter's, at 6:00 pm. The Red Foxes will sponsor the NCAA 'Take A Kid The Game' program, all children age 14 and under, accompanied by an adult, will receive free admission to the game.
