Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's basketball team won their fourth straight game with an 80-51 victory over Niagara this evening at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 8-2 led before the Purple Eagles scored six straight to tie the contest at 8-8. Marist then put together a 21-2 run to gain their largest lead of the half (29-10) with 7:21 remaining before intermission. The Red Foxes extended a 16 point halftime advantage (38-22) to as many as 37 (77-40) before closing out the victory. The win improved Marist to 8-6 on the year and their best ever start in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) to 4-1. Niagara now stands at 2-12 on the season ans 0-5 in the MAAC.
Junior Sarah Tift (North Kingstown, RI) shot 10-15 from the floor and recorded a double-double with a career high 26 points and 12 rebounds. She also tied a career high with five assists and scored 12 points and grabbed nine boards in the first twenty minutes to help spark the Red Foxes. Senior Diesa Seidel (Red Hook, NY) had 10 points and five blocks and Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) added 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench for Marist.
Colleen Toetz came off the bench to lead Niagara with 12 points, while Sarah Heben pulled down a team high 10 boards.
Marist nailed .467 percent off their attempts from the field and out rebounded Niagara 52-40. The Red Fox defense limited the Purple Eagles to just .268 percent shooting on the night, including 0-11 from beyond the arc.
The Red Foxes will return to action this Sunday, January 13th when they host MAAC foe Canisius in the McCann Center at 2:00 PM.
