Buffalo, NY - The Marist College women's basketball team was defeated 103-82 by host Canisius this evening in Buffalo, NY. The Golden Griffs made four of their first five shots to jump out to an early 9-4 lead. The Red Foxes then rallied and took their only lead of the game at 10-9 with 16:06 remaining in the first stanza. Canisius closed out the half with a 46-18 run and went ahead 56-28 at the break behind a 9-11 performance from beyond the arc. Marist played better in the second half and out scored Canisius 54-47 before falling to 9-11 on the year and 5-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Golden Griffs improved to 9-11 and 6-5 in the MAAC.
Sophomores Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) and Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) each had 13 points to lead the Marist offense. Del Preore added eight rebounds and Vecchio dished out eight assists. Freshman Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) recorded four steals in seven minutes off the bench for the Red Foxes.
Canisius had four players in double figures, led by Shauna Geronzin with 26 points. Geronzin added 12 rebounds to record a double double along with Jessica Butler who scored 14 points and pulled down 10 boards.
Marist shot .403 from the field for the game, but hit just .240 (6-25) percent from downtown. The Golden Griffs shot .468 from the floor and connected on .526 (10-19) percent of their three point attempts.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, February 2nd at 1:00 PM when they take on host Niagara. The team will then return home to face Fairfield on Tuesday, February 5th at 7:00 PM in the McCann Center.
