Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's basketball team cruised to a 104-47 victory over Columbia this evening at the McCann Center. Senior Diesa Seidel (Red Hook, NY) scored 24 points and became the eleventh player at Marist to score 1,000 career points when she hit the first of two free throws with 12:01 remaining in the first half. For the game Seidel was 8-9 from the foul line and pulled down seven rebounds. The Red Foxes scored 100 points for the sixth time in school history and the first time since the 1985-86 season. Marist also tied a school record for margin of victory with 57.
The Red Foxes jumped out early, scoring the first seven points, and never looked back, they led 53-22 at the half. Sophomore Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) had a double-double with a career high 24 points and 10 boards, while shooting 9-12 from the field in just 15 minutes of action. Marist also received a nine assists and six point effort from sophomore guard Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ).
Columbia was led by 15 points from Susan Kern and seven points and eight rebounds from Edyette Grifka.
Marist (6-6, 2-1) shot .500 from the field and limited the Lions (6-6, 0-0) to .271 from the floor and .056 from beyond the arc. The Red Foxes pulled down a season high 57 rebounds and held a 57-35 advantage on the glass.
The Red Foxes will return to action next Tuesday, January 8th at 5:30 PM when they travel to Connecticut to take on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Fairfield at the Bridgeport Arena. Marist will then return home next Friday January 11th when they play host to Niagara at the McCann Center at 7:00 PM.
