Bridgeport, Conn.- The Marist College women's basketball team improved their record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to 3-1 and 7-6 overall with an 85-71 win over Fairfield this evening in The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. Senior Diesa Seidel (Red Hook, NY) scored 20 of her game high 29 points in the second half as the Red Foxes built upon a 34-30 halftime advantage. The Red Foxes never relinquished the lead after going ahead 8-6 with 16:29 left in the first period. The Stags pulled to within two (58-56) at 7:52 in the second half before a 20-5 run by Marist, including 14 points from Seidel, put the game away.
Freshman Kristin Keller (Millbrook, NY) recorded the first double-double of her career with a career best 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Red Foxes also received double figures from junior Sarah Tift (North Kingstown, RI) with 13 points and Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) with 10 assists to go along with her eight points. For the game Seidel shot 12-16 from the floor and pulled down eight boards.
Ayanna Brown totaled 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds on 7-14 from the field and 9-10 from the foul line to lead the Stags. Megan Light (15) and Amy Hurford (11) also reached double digits for Fairfield which fell to 1-3 in the MAAC and 5-8 overall.
Marist shot a season best 57.4 percent from the field, including 68.0 percent in the second half, and held Fairfield to 37.5 percent shooting for the game. The Red Foxes hit 21-23 (91.3 %) from the charity stripe and held a 38-30 advantage on the glass.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Friday, January 11th at 7:00 PM when they host Niagara at the McCann Center. Marist will also be at home on Sunday, January 13th when they welcome Canisius to town. Game time is set for 2:00 PM.
