New Rochelle, NY - The Marist College men's soccer team defeated the Iona Gaels 3-1 on Friday afternoon to open conference play. With the win, Marist improves their record to 2-6-1, and 1-0 in the MAAC. The loss drops Iona to 0-11-1 on the year, with a record of 0-2 in the MAAC.

The Red Foxes were outshot 27-12 in the match, but found a way to attack the net with efficiency. Joseph Crespo (Bolton, CT), an All-MAAC First Team selection a year ago, scored his first goal of the year for Marist in the 37th minute, unassisted, to make the score 1-0.

Luke Shkreli tied the game on a penalty kick for Iona in the 71st minute. Bruno Machado (Danbury, CT) gave the Red Foxes a 2-1 lead at the 84-minute mark when he scored off a pass from David Musinski (Hicksville, NY). Ricky Cusano (Pomona, NY) capped the scoring when he found the net with a little over a minute left in the game as Machado provided the assist on the play.

John Balzarini (Holbrook, NY) had another outstanding game in goal with 14 saves on the afternoon.

The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, October 13, when they travel to Fairfield for a 6:00 p.m. match.
