Men's Soccer Wins Second In A Row, 2-1 Over Manhattan

Oct. 20, 2002

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's soccer team stretched its winning streak to two games with a 2-1 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Manhattan, this evening on Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes improve to 4-7-1 on the year, and are now 3-1 in MAAC play, with nine points in the standings.

Red Fox goalkeeper John Balzarini (Holbrook, NY) continued to impress in goal, earning his second consecutive win and third in four games. The sophomore, playing goal for just the fifth game in his soccer career, made seven saves for the Red Foxes, to help stymie the Jasper offense.

Marist struck early in the contest, when Bruno Machado (Danbury, CT) accepted a midfield feed from Joe Crespo (Bolton, CT) and slid the ball under a charging Manhattan goalkeeper for the first tally of the game. Manhattan would answer that goal 12 minutes later, when Walter Kotchin (North Hanover, NJ)beat Balzarini to the far corner, knotting the score at 1-1.

The game would remain tied through halftime, and for the first 17 minutes of the second half, before the Red Foxes broke through with the game-winning goal. Chris Zitkevitz (Elmer, NJ) passed a ball into the 18-meter box from midfield, which Matt Flaherty (Fishkill, NY) dribbled past the goalkeeper and deposited into the back of the net, for the game winner.

Marist outshot the visiting Jaspers 11-10 on the night, with Manhattan goalkeeper, Antonio Treglia (Brookville, NY) recorded four saves in his 90 minutes of play. The Jaspers fall to 3-9-1 overall and 1-2-1 in MAAC play with the loss.

Marist will return to action on Friday, October 25th, traveling to Lawrenceville, NJ for a 3:00 pm game with Rider University
