RIVERDALE, NY - The Marist College men's cross country team placed fourth out of 17 teams at the Metropolitan Championships, held Friday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. It was the first time in school history the Red Foxes competed at the Metropolitan Championships. Marist joined the league in the fall of 2001.
The Red Foxes had 159 points and trailed only regional powers Columbia University (56 points), Manhattan College (60 points) and Iona College (103 points). After Marist's fourth-place finish were the following teams: St. John's (171), New York University (177), Rutgers (202), Southern Connecticut (212), FDU (224), Fordham (231), Seton Hall (260), Stony Brook (282), CW Post (345), Wagner (428), St. Francis (465), LIU (466), NY Tech (incomplete).
Junior Kirk Dornton (Syracuse, NY) led Marist with a personal-best time of 25:45.00, good for 11th place. That time ranks him sixth on the Marist all-time list of Van Cortlandt Park times. Senior Jason Grady (Rhinebeck, NY) also notched a top-25 finish with his 17th-place time of 26:16.87.
Rounding out the scoring places for Marist were sophomore Geoff Decker (Delmar, NY), 42nd in 27:02.40; senior co-captain Jamal Padgett (Syracuse, NY), 47th in 27:16.97; and freshman Justin Harris (Wappingers Falls, NY), 57th in 27:34.22.
