Jamaica, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team lost their season opener to St. John's University, 68-50, this afternoon at Alumni Hall. The last time the Red Foxes lost their season opener was November 18, 2000 when they fell to the University of Richmond, 93-85.
The game was tightly contested through the first 20 minutes with Marist being down at the half by one point (29-28). Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) led the Red Foxes with 14 points, most coming in the first half when she scored eight of the teams first 16 points. Magarity went 7-14 from the field, while grabbing three rebounds and blocking one shot in her 32 minutes of play.
The second half was unkind to the Red Foxes as they shot 23% from the field, shooting 31% on the night. St. John's came out firing with guard Danielle Rainey scoring most of her 21 points in the last 20 minutes of the game. Rainey went 7-7 from the line, while making two out of three, three point shots.
Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) led the team in rebounds with five, while racking up eight points on the night. Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) started where she left off last season having five assists for the Red Foxes. Marist shot 63% from the line with Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) and Kerry Sullivan (Crompond, NY) being perfect, going 4-4 and 2-2, respectively.
Marist will look for its first win Tuesday, November 26th when they play the University of New Hampshire in the season's home opener at 7:00 p.m. in the McCann Center.
